How to Install an Inground Pool Pump
- 1). Remove your old pump. Go to your breaker box and turn off the electrical power in your pool area. Test to make sure that all power is off by trying to turn the pump on. If it does not come on, your power is off. If it turns on, try other breaker switches until you choose the correct one. If you currently have a pool pump, unscrew the water lines; cut PVC pipes that connect to your old pump; disconnect the power adapter on the back of the motor and remove the unit from the pad.
- 2). Use the manufacturer's manual to guide you through the installation process. Place the new pump on the same pad as the old unit. Connect the return water lines from the pool to the pump. Apply some pipe sealant to the threads of the plastic PVC pipe and screw it inside of the pump intake hose.
- 3). Mix a a small amount of cement in a container according to the directions on the bag. Use cement to attach the ends of the hoses that connect to the front and top of your pool pump by sliding them together and twisting them. Make sure you do this before the cement dries.
- 4). Connect your pump to the return system with a compression fitting, (similar to a screw) and cut the existing line that connected your old pump to your water filter. Use the PVC pipe cutter to sever the line.
- 5). Build the new pipe line from the pump to the filter with PVC pipes. Attach the pump to the filter by using sleeves and elbows. Apply a thin layer of primer to the insides of the sleeves and elbows and allow them to dry. Apply PVC adhesive over the dry primed areas and push the PVC elbows and sleeves together, while twisting to spread the adhesive. Let the adhesive dry.
- 6). Reconnect the power. Place your power adapter from the old pump, removed in step 1, onto the back of the motor of the new pump. Now that the plumbing is complete, turn the power back on in your breaker box.
