How to Choose a Stud Dog
- 1). Research owners of studs in your area and across the country. Watch for owners that have a good reputation and have dogs that are known for their superior genetic attributes.
- 2). Contact the breeders with the finest studs or a breeder that you have already had contact with. If you do not know any stud owners, seek references from friends or colleagues in the breeding world.
- 3). Narrow down your choices to the top two to three breeders from the initial phone calls.
- 4). Set up an appointment to meet each stud. Never allow a stud to breed with your female that you have only seen in a picture.
- 5). Ask the stud's owner about the overall health of the stud. Inquire about any injuries or genetic maladies that the stud may have. These illnesses will be passed onto any puppies that the stud may produce.
- 6). Look over the studs yourself. Check for any physical abnormalities and signs of illness.
- 7). Sign an agreement with the owner of the stud you wish to breed your female with. The agreement should outline the price of the service and specify a date and time that the two dogs will meet.
