The impact of trans fat on your anti-aging regimen

This week, I was doing a clean up of my hard drive, and I found an old article from the month of September. I remembered, in September we were doing the launch of Jouvaderm. We were very busy at the office, no time to read this article but I have kept it in order to refer to it later.

At that time, Mrs Obama, the first lady, was beginning a tour focusing on good eating habits and young kids. Her tour is aiming at schools and her message is about eating snack make of green vegetables and fruits. She promotes to the kids to eat apple and carrots instead of Coca-cola, chips and chocolate bar. Two or three weeks ago she was here in South Florida to promote her plan.

Her speech should be considered a good advice, bearing in mind that one kid out of three is believe obese or over-weight. This situation prepares the path to the adulthood where two adults out of three are considered obese or over-weight.

Her message is in direct line with our message aiming to advocate a longer and stronger life with good eating habits. The article I related at the beginning of this post was about Mr Glenn Beck who was holding a meeting, back in September in Illinois. He was with 5,000 of his conservative friends when he ridiculed first lady Michelle Obama's campaign to get people to eat healthier snacks with this historic quote:

"Get away from my french fries, Mrs. Obama," Beck warned. "First politician that comes up to me with a carrot stick, I've got a place for it. And it's not in my tummy."

His message campaigned in favor of glorifying bad eating habits, if you are a real American patriot, you should intake tons of french fries, hot-dogs and hamburgers. I don't want to mix politics and anti-aging, but this new patriotic French fries passion make me wrote about trans fat.

Trans fat is totally opposed to our anti-aging dedication. The absolute worst ingredient your diet could possibly contain. Trans fat is responsible of coronary heart disease (Raise bad cholesterol AND lower good cholesterol), stroke, diabetes, cancer, obesity, liver dysfunction and infertility. Something you don't really want in your plate.

Fast food is pretty much where you will find this type of ingredients. The American Heart Association recommends a maximum of no more than 2 grams of trans fat per day. Not per meal or per food, but per day. And, interestingly. They also say that there are enough naturally occurring trans fats in some meat and dairy products that most people already reach this maximum 2 grams without the additional consumption of the industrially manufactured trans fats.

The website of Burger King informed us that a regular French fries contain no less than 7 grams of trans fat. More than three times the amount of trans fat you should be eating in an entire day. After a few research, we found out that the great trans fat winner was White Castle with their White Castle Homemade Onion Rings that pop up at 30 grams of trans fat per portion. Wow!

On the other hand, red meat contains fat, as you know, but only 2% or 3% of the total fat is trans fat. Chances are that if you eat normally you will never reach these 2 grams of trans fat per day. So, why Mr. Beck wants the American people to eat more trans fat and French fries?

Money. All this industrially manufactured refined food that we find on the market contains more sugar and trans fat than ever. These ingredients never satisfy the hunger and make you craving for more, so they can sell more and make more money.

You can compare this to the cigarettes manufacturers that knew that the nicotine was addictive, but they always said that the cigarettes were not harmful. No, they wanted the people to get addicted to the nicotine in order to sell more cigarettes and make more money. We have today a very poor opinion about the cigarettes manufacturer, but remember that the food manufacturers are doing just the same. They are using highly addictive ingredients that do more harms than good, just because the people are addict to the sugar and the trans fat, they will sell more refined food and make more money.

Trans fat is not necessary to our nutrition, it was introduce about 100 years ago but was highly popularize lately in the last 30 years. It becomes part of the food chains. Trans fat come from the hydrogenation of plant oil which enable the margarine and hydrogenated shortening like Crisco.

Trans fat is cheap and help to enhance the shelf life of certain food, but it is not metabolized by the human system. When you intake trans fat, it stays for a longer period of time in the bloodstream and might cause deposition and plaque formation.

So, we know that today food manufacturer put more trans fat, sugar and salt in the food preparation because they know it will cause over eating. Over eating is good for them because they will make more money, without having any respect about the impact it will have over our national health.

That's why it make me mad, when I hear low flying politician advocating bad eating habits, it's surely not for your good but for their wallet. It is your responsibility to stand your ground and keep eating what is good for you. Yes, a good snack of carrots and apple is way better than any industrial manufactured snack they have out there for our kids.

So, if you want to live longer and stronger, adhere to an anti-aging program that favors eating lot of greens, fish and fruits. Anti-aging is not a diet, it's a way of life when you understand the difference between diet and lifestyle, you will find it very easy to keep good eating habits while staying away from the highly refined industrial manufactured food.

By the way, I am ot saying that you have to isolate yourself on an island and become a vegan. Just be careful by selecting the best ingredients the majority of the time. Doing so, you can have a little step aside from time to time without hurting your health.

For example, I am a French fries lover. Just like Glenn Beck. But, I will never let my children to snack on French fries or include French fries with every meal. In the case I want to eat French fries, I make it a special event. When I eat French fries it has to be the best from the best. But I do it about once every two month or so.

I select my own perfectly shape potatoes that I will cut to the perfect dimension. Then I will blanche it and then cook it to the perfection. A bit of salt and then, yummy! I eat my French fries with a big green salad, which help to catch the fat. But after that, that's it. It is not a daily or a weekly event. You got it?
