Basic Lawn Care Tips

    Growing Green

    • Plant grass seed in areas of the lawn that are bare or the grass is thin. Use a raking tool to scratch the surface of the dirt and apply grass seed thoroughly around the area. Cover with straw, not hay, to prevent birds and other animals from making off with the seed. Water plentifully daily until new sprouts of grass begin to show through the straw. Remove the straw once the area has grass growing in and continue to water daily if you are in a dry climate. If in a wetter climate, water as needed to keep the soil moist.

    Spring Care

    • Grass Field

In the spring months, aerate the lawn. This can be achieved with a large tool that is similar to a lawn roller but has spikes located around the roller. The spikes will place holes 1/2 inch in diameter and nearly 4 inches deep in the lawn every few feet. This allows oxygen and water to reach the roots of the grass, making it a healthier lawn. Aerators are available in a push style, or a larger version that acts as a riding mower attachment can be purchased for larger lawns.

At the start of mowing season, fertilize the lawn with a two-in-one fertilizer with a weed killer component. Follow the manufacturer's directions to locate proper application amount for the size of the lawn. The fertilizer will sink into the aerated holes, feeding the root system of the grass and killing off any patches of crab grass and weeds present. This weed killer will also eliminate any patches of clover present in the lawn. As these types of vegetation die off, the grass will begin to take over the space. Grass seed can also be applied to these areas to quicken the process.

Before making the first cut with the mower, have the blade sharpened. A clean, sharp blade will cut the top of the grass without causing damage to the shaft that a dull blade will. Replacement blades can be sharpened or purchased at a local garden supply store. Do not cut grass shorter than 2 inches. This will allow moisture to remain in the soil, promoting a healthy grass base.

    Maintenance

    • To maintain a beautiful lawn, watering is a must. Grass roots require moisture to remain healthy and promote growth and color. Weekly watering with a liquid fertilizer is essential to promote good color growth. Many are available with a garden hose attachment to feed while watering. In a moist climate, watering may only be necessary weekly. In drier areas, water every two or three days. Check the soil often for dryness. The soil should remain moist, not soupy or dry and flaky.
