    • 1). Determine if you dryer has a pilot light or an automatic ignition system. If you are unsure if your dryer has a pilot light, consult your dryer owner's manual. Dryers with automatic ignition systems don't have pilot lights. If the automatic ignition system is not working, contact the manufacturer of your dryer for warranty repair or contact a licensed professional.

    • 2). Remove the access panel on your dryer that has a pilot light. You can normally find the access panel at the bottom of your dryer. Consult your dryer owner's manual if you can't find the access panel on your dryer.

    • 3). Smell for gas around the area where you removed the control panel. If you smell gas, do not light the pilot and call your local gas company.

    • 4). Turn the gas control knob to the "ON" position.

    • 5). Find the lever near the gas control knob. Depress the lever and continue to hold the lever in the depressed position.

    • 6). Light the pilot with a match or lighter. You will find the pilot at the front of the control mechanism. Most dryers include a label so you know exactly where to light the pilot. If your dryer is not labeled, consult your dryer owner's manual to determine the correct point to light your dryer.

    • 7). Continue to hold the lever in the depressed position for one minute after lighting the pilot. After one minute release, the lever and replace the control panel.
