A singer can do many things to protect his or her singing voice.  At the top of the list should be vocal exercises. Vocal exercises in an essential aspect of singing effectively. Learning how to sing properly in Singapore is very similar to when athletes train for a completion.  Muscles must be warmed up in order not to injure or strain them.

Our vocal cords are also made up of muscles.   These muscles must be treated right before we subject them to the exacting work of producing sustained high or low notes. When we warm up the vocal chords, our goal is to achieve a gradual stretching of the muscles to make them more flexible and elastic.  What we want to avoid is to stress the muscles too hard, too soon because this can cause muscle fatigue or muscle pull.

Improve your singing through humming

There are many exercises that can help with preparing the vocal cords.  One is through humming.  Humming requires only little effort from the voice box but is a very good way to warm up since it enables the muscles of the vocal cords to vibrate at low speed only.  This should prepare the muscles for the more demanding notes by improving blood flow to the muscles, thereby decreasing muscle stiffness.

Regular humming also can strengthen the muscles because it is also an exercise in breathing.  You get to practice breathing by inhaling and exhaling deeply or holding on to a note for a few seconds to extend your control gradually.

Vocalize

After the mild exercise of humming, you can proceed to vocalization to improve your singing voice.  You can do animal noises like ‘mooo'  or ‘baaah' or ‘meow' or ‘tweet-tweet' for starters, then move on to repeating, prolonging or stretching out syllables like do, la or ya in ascending scale.  Try to start on a note right about the middle of your range.  And gradually climb or descend the scales.  After a while you can do intervals with the help of an instrument.  Being able to sing intervals instinctively or by ear is one great skill to have and is taught in some beginner singing lessons in Singapore.

Vocalization is an essential step in warming up your vocal cords.  It prepares the muscles effectively, making it easy for you to reach those high notes effortlessly.

Develop your vibrato

A good singing voice is one that can do runs with any song without losing control.  Runs are produced through a good singing vibrato.  To develop your vibrato, do scales in half steps up and down from your range repeatedly.  Doing this half an hour a day will greatly improve your vibrato and enable you to control your runs and become more creative in your singing.

Breathing exercises

Proper breathing while singing is the key to a successful performance.  A good voice teacher in Singapore will teach you to draw breath from your diaphragm while singing, to open up your throat properly and relax your body and mind.  If you practice this regularly, it will come easy to you during your performances without thought and much effort.  Go ahead and start warming up now and you can look forward to mastering the art of singing like a pro.
