A Closer Look at The Concept 2 Rower

We all first heard about Concept 2 rower exercise machines back in the early 1980s. The company is located in Vermont where the winters are very cold with lots of snow. The simple objective is to make it possible to work out, or train, indoors if the rivers were all frozen and iced over. From the start, this company set out to apply the best engineering and technology available in their rowing exercise machines. The person writing this article, me of course, is a Concept 2 user, and I really can tell you how satisfied I am with their product. So I'll talk more about several important information in this review of Concept 2 rowing workout machines.

The Concept 2 company produces the Model D and E with the Model E rower being costlier. The Model E is available just as you see it, but the Model D is available with an option of performance monitor. EveryEvery last rowing machine typically comes with a performance monitor of which there are two types, the PM3 and PM4. If you want a better monitor with the Model D rowing machine, then you will have to go with the D model with the improved monitor. The higher priced Model E always has the PM4 with it as the main monitoring device. The Model E costs about $350 more than the Model D based on which monitoring device you choose.

The performance monitors, PM3 and PM4, are sleek designs that provide the most important metrics for monitoring your pulse rate and rowing stats. Your pulse rate is monitored by use of a comfortable device that straps across your chest. There is no discomfort having it strapped as it is very thin with an elastic spandex strap. I can tell you from my own experience that you'll never know a heart rate monitor is strapped across your chest while you are rowing. The data from the heart rate monitor is actually transmitted to the PM3 or PM4 for processing and display.

The only thing needed is the resistance to simulate a rowing action, and that is attained with a flywheel on the front of the rower. The flywheel is confined in an appropriately designed housing for safety reasons. The manner in which you modify the resistance level with rowing is a mechanical, and manual, lever on the flywheel. When you are rowing you will hear the seat go back and forth, the chain movement and the whirringwhizzing of wind from the flywheel, and the noise level is very low. Since the flywheel is very similar to a fan, you are going to hear a gentle swirling sound. But it is much softer than any fan because you will not be creating the same amount of RPM's as a fan does. All in all, you could easily use a Concept 2 rowing exercise machine in the next room without rousing other people.

You can determine your rowing speed, plus other information, from the PM3 or PM4 performance monitors. Some of the available rowing metrics include total rowing time, total distance rowed, 500 meter split times and number of strokes per minute. Your approach will largely be determined by by your existing level of physical condition and general reason for using the rower. This primarily concerns whether you are rowing for general fitness, or if you row in competition and what level you enter in.
