The first and perhaps the most important step towards writing an incisive and inquisitive term paper is choosing the topic of the term paper.
Though most teachers suggests topics to write on but if you have a choice to choose than do it with utmost care.
While choosing the topic student must take into consideration few very important things - Interested in the subject and try to find answers to your questions Most well written term papers are borne out of student's quest to understand the subject.
If a student is not interested in the subject than writing an inquisitive and thought provoking term paper is almost impossible.
So first and foremost choose the subject you love and feel confident about.
Scope of the Topic Before one finalizes upon any topic, one must analyze the scope of the topic.
The scope can be determined by the required length of the term paper, suppose one have to write a 20 page term paper than the scope of the topic should be wide so that it can do justice with all the important aspects of the topic.
On the other hand if one has to write a five page term paper then the scope should be narrower as doing justice with one area in depth is better than covering the whole subject.
Off hands my personal experience is that professors like a wider scope topic in the beginning of the course and a narrowly focused term paper at the end of the course.
The reason for it is when the course starts it is designed to acquaint students with all the aspects of the subject while at the end it zeroes down to specialization.
Dip-In Research Secondly before finalizing the topic, do delve yourself into the available material regarding the subject on internet and in your Library.
An initial dip-in research will help in first finalizing the scope and secondly it will help in planning the term paper better.
Once assured that there is enough material on the subject to do justice with the scope of the topic student can go ahead and finalize the topic of his choice.
Choosing the topic can make or break the scope of the paper and with it your academic performance.
So make sure when you decide upon a topic that you have answered all of the above questions with conviction.
Once you finalized on the topic - make a proper format, scope of the topic and how you will go about doing research and what will be the prospective outcome and consult it with your professor.
Knowing the professor take on the issue will help in planning things better and it will also provide professor opportunity to help you constructively in your endeavor of writing a term paper.
