How to Treat Yeast Problems in Dogs
- 1). Take your dog to the veterinarian to confirm diagnosis of yeast infection. Allergies, seborrhea (excessive oil production) and dermatitis (inflammation) are common skin problems with similar characteristics to a yeast infection. In a dog's ear, mites and bacteria also look similar and can develop into a yeast infection if left untreated, so proper diagnosis is essential.
- 2). If a yeast infection is confirmed, your veterinarian may prescribe ointment for the ears, oral medication to kill the infection and shampoo for the skin. Make sure to follow the treatment plan through completion, though, since yeast infections are likely to return if the original condition is not corrected.
- 3). Check your dog's ear frequently. Yeast organisms like a dark, wet environment. If your dog has floppy ears (such as a golden retriever or spaniel), she is more susceptible to yeast infection than dogs with pointed or cropped ears (Dobermans, German shepherd). Dry your dog's ears after he bathes or swims to help prevent moisture from being trapped inside the ears. You may also want to treat the ear with a solution of equal parts of white vinegar and water. Vinegar has drying properties, and the yeast does not like the acidity.
- 4). Feed your dog a healthy diet. A weakened immune system can often lead to yeast overgrowth. Feed your dog a well-balanced meal with lots of nutrients to help rebuild a weakened immune system and decrease the chances of a yeast infection returning. Talk to your veterinarian about adding vitamin C to your dog's diet, since it can assist in fending off bacterial infections.
- 5). Try plain, organic yogurt to treat your dog's yeast infection. Yogurt contains Acidophilus, a good bacteria that helps control the balance of bacteria in the stomach. One teaspoon (for small dogs) or tablespoon (for large dogs) mixed in with their daily meal once or twice a day is usually all that is needed. Some dogs are lactose intolerant, so start with a small amount and see how she does.
