    • 1). Make sure your school has an NHS chapter. The NHS has a school search on its website where you can check and see whether your school in Maryland has a chapter. If your school does not have a chapter, you can start one by contacting the national office and submitting an application. If your school does have a chapter, students are eligible for selection.

    • 2). Attain a B average, a 3.0, or whatever average is set by the school's faculty council. This is the base criterion for selection for the NHS. If the student meets this criteria, he/she is then judged on four areas: scholarship, service, leadership and character. The student must make voluntary contributions to the community and show resourcefulness, dependability and a positive attitude about life. The local chapter may establish its own criteria for selection, as long as it does not fall below the national standard set by the NHS.

    • 3). Participate in sharing ideas, fundraisers and other forms of community service. Students are encouraged to continue the activities that got them into the NHS when they become members. Students are also eligible for scholarships, awards and other benefits that come with membership in the NHS.
