How to Harvest Worm Castings
- 1). Push the finished compost to one side of the worm bin, leaving half the worm bin empty. Do this once all the bedding material and food scraps have broken down to a dark brown or black, soil-like material.
- 2). Place fresh newspaper strips, peat moss or whatever bedding material you prefer into a bucket. Add just enough water to cover the bedding. Leave the bedding to soak for two hours.
- 3). Remove the bedding from the bucket and squeeze out as much moisture as possible. The bedding should be as moist as a wrung-out sponge.
- 4). Place the bedding into the empty half of the worm bin. Use enough bedding to fill the bin 2/3 full.
- 5). Bury a handful of kitchen scraps in the fresh bedding. Place the lid back on the worm bin.
- 6). Wait one week, adding more food to the fresh bedding as the old food is eaten. The worms will migrate into the fresh bedding in order to access the food.
- 7). Scoop the finished compost from its half of the worm bin. Add additional bedding to the now empty half of the worm bin. Most of the worms will have moved into the fresh bedding so very few worms will be lost in the process.
