• In the interior design world there are designers and decorators. Designers usually pursue a bachelor's degree before entering the field and thus can command a higher salary. They are also usually employed at firms that can increase pay. Decorators can be self-taught, or take associate classes at decorating schools or community colleges. They also work in firms, but many are independent.
  
  

Significance

• Although professional education is not required for interior decorators, it helps. Decorators certified with the Designer/Decorator Society of America (DSA) earn more, and education tells clients that the decorator is someone who knows design trends and doesn't merely have a "good eye." A decorator should know architecture, some engineering, art history and contemporary style and design trends. Knowledge of landscaping, housewares manufacturers and textiles also helps.

• According to the U.S. Department of Labor, interior decorators report making anywhere between $20,000 and $80,000 annually. Joining a high-end architectural firm may yield a higher salary, but working independently gives many designers ultimate creative freedom.

• The job outlook for interior decorators shows faster growth compared with other artistic and creative fields The U.S. government shows 19 percent employment growth projected between 2006-2016 for interior designers. Although this may not be the same for decorators, it is a good guide.
  
  

Considerations

• Interior decorating and designing are very competitive fields that require a broad range of knowledge and artistic skill. Competition can mean high salaries, but it can also mean a fierce job market.
