What Should You Look for When Buying a Juicer

So you're thinking of making the smart decision to give juicing a try and enjoy all the health benefits it gives you.
It is important to realize that there is more to buying a juicer than just going to your neighborhood appliance store and buying one that is on sale.
There are several factors you should look into.
After all, you want a juicer that is easy to use and maintain, will allow you to produce high quality concoctions that you enjoy and will work well for a long time to come.
Here are four important factors you should consider when buying a juicer: • Cost • Juicer type • Brand • Customer reviews 1.
Cost
Juicers range in price from $25 to over $500.
Obviously the more expensive devices have loads of features, and while some of those features may sound neat, do you really need them? If you are budget-conscience, obviously you will choose one of the cheaper models, but don't base your decision on price alone.
Analyze some of the other characteristics of the machines and choose the one that is the best value within your price range.
A machine that lasts a long time and makes more juice per pound of input produce will be the cheapest in the long run.
2.
Juicer Type
There are several different types of juicer that may best meet your needs, so we'll at each in detail as this is the most important factor of all: • Centrifugal juicers • Single gear masticating juicers • Upright masticating juicers • Triturating juicers Centrifugal juicers tend to be the most popular and cost effective.
These make for a great beginner model and are easiest to keep clean and maintain.
If you go to a department store or appliance store, then this is the type you will most likely see.
If you do go with a centrifugal juicer, be sure to check the warranty because most are less than a year.
The way centrifugal juicers work is you feed chunks of fruits and vegetables into the feeder chute, and the machine will grate the food into pulp.
It will then spin the pulp against a strainer and use centrifugal force to separate the juice into an isolated container.
For basic fruits and vegetables, centrifugal juicers will do an adequate job.
The nice thing with these machines is that you can feed large pieces of fruits and veggies into the machine, especially if it has a wide mouth feeder, and it does a fast job in producing the juice.
However you may not get the best yield as the pulp often remains wet, so you'll have some waste, especially for grassy and leafy vegetables.
You'll need a more high-end device to do a good job extracting juice from herbs and vegetables like spinach, lettuce, parsley, and wheatgrass.
Because of the high spinning speed that the juice is exposed to, it causes a condition called aeration, which means oxygen bubbles are trapped inside the juice.
This causes it to oxidize more quickly and spoil, so juice produced from a centrifugal juicer won't have that long of a shelf life.
So to summarize, a centrifugal juicer serves well as a basic and cost effective juicing appliance where you won't be juicing a lot of leafy fibrous vegetables and you don't plan on storing a lot of juice for future use.
Single gear masticating juicers are more high octane than their centrifugal counterparts and can handle pretty much any kind of fruit or vegetable.
The way they work is they use a single auger to chew up the fruit and vegetable fibers as well as break up the plant cells, which results in more juice, nutrients and fiber in the final product.
Single gear machines produce more yields per pound of produce while operating at slower speeds than centrifugal juicers, which also results in less foam and aeration in the juice.
Single gear masticating juicers are more expensive, but if you want higher quality juice that is more nutritious and has a longer shelf life, this is the type of juicer you should get.
If you are on a budget but want to get as much of the health benefits as possible from juicing, the single gear masticating juicer is the one that is recommended.
Upright masticating juicers are kind of a cross between centrifugal and single gear juicers.
They operate at efficient, low speeds for higher juice quality but are housed in a space-saving design similar to the centrifugal type.
Upright masticating juicers use a two-step process to first crush the food into pulp, and then press the pulp to extract even more juice.
This is a relatively new type of juicer so there are not many established upright masticating juicers on the market.
Triturating juicers use a twin gear mechanism to operate at an even greater efficiency than single gear juicers.
However, you will pay for it as these types are the most expensive and will cost hundreds of dollars.
These juicers give you the same benefits as single gear juices except the benefits are multiplied, so if budget is of no concern to you and quality is, you would be best served with a triturating juicer.
3.
Brand
You should consider the manufacturer as well when looking for a juicer to buy.
You want to choose a company that stands behind their brand.
This means that the device you choose should have at least a one year warranty, so that if there are any problems with it in that timeframe you won't be out of luck.
I saw an item on Amazon that costs almost $500 yet only has a 90 day warranty.
Needless to say that won't be a purchase I'll be making anytime soon.
Also there are brands that are well-known for their juicers and other kitchen appliances.
For example Jack LaLanne seems to specialize exclusively in juicers, while Breville is known for making a variety of quality appliances.
You can't go wrong with either.
Other brands to consider include Black & Decker, Champion, Hamilton Beach and Progressive International.
4.
Customer Reviews
Finally, you want to look on the major online retail stores and shopping sites like Amazon, Shopping.
com and Best Buy for customer feedback and ratings.
The machine you go with should have at least an 80% rating (ideally higher), and the negative reviews should mostly be trivial matters that are unlikely to affect you like they did the reviewer.
Also the more reviews a product has, the more accurate the product rating tends to be.
These are the four main things what you should look for when buying a juicer.
First you want to choose the right juicer type within your budget.
If getting high yield and a maximum amount of nutrients into your product is a major concern, you don't want to choose a centrifugal juicer.
Finally, you should go with a reputable brand that is established in the juicing industry and has products that are well-received by their customers.
The mistake a lot of people make when purchasing a juicer is weighing too much of their consideration on price.
A juicer that is three times as expensive as another but is made of stainless steel construction and produces a 20% higher yield will be a much better cost-effective purchase.
Best of luck finding your ideal juicer!
