The Best Way to Shock Your Pool
- 1). Fill a 5-gallon bucket with 3 to 4 gallons of water, or roughly 80 percent of the way to the top. This does not have to be water from your pool. Because the shock treatment materials come in a grainy, gritty form, they must dissolve in water before adding them to the pool.
- 2). Add calcium hydrochlorite shock treatment chemical, following the manufacturer's directions for how much to use. Stir your shock treatment chemicals with a stir stick until they dissolve in the bucket.
- 3). Pour the water from your bucket into your pool. Either pour the water all around your pool, including in the center, or pour it directly in front of your water circulation system. The method you choose doesn't matter, as long as the shock treatment chemical gets all around your pool. Wait eight hours (or the amount of time specified by the specific chemical you use) before allowing anyone to go back into the pool.
