How to Remove Bugs From a Mattress

    • 1). Remove all bedding from the mattress. Wash the sheets, comforter, pillowcases and mattress cover in the washer using the hottest water allowed for the fabric, and then dry the bedding on high heat. If chlorine bleach is safe, use the recommended amount in the wash cycle.

    • 2). Take the mattress off the bed and lean it upright. If possible, take the mattress outdoors for cleaning.

    • 3). Vacuum both sides of the mattress thoroughly with an attachment hose. Use a hard attachment rather than a brush; the brush only spreads the bugs around. If there are any seams or ridges along the edges of the mattress, make sure to vacuum these areas well. Bugs tend to hide in small spots like these. Throw out the vacuum bag or empty the canister immediately after vacuuming the mattress.

    • 4). Clean both sides of the mattress thoroughly with a steam cleaner. The high heat from the steamer kills any remaining bugs and eggs. Follow the instructions for filling up and operating the steamer. Work from the top of the mattress down, and run the steamer hose vertically down the mattress. Go over each section only one time, and avoid holding the cleaner in one spot for more than a couple of seconds. Excessive moisture in a mattress can cause mildew.

    • 5). Leave the mattress upright to air-dry completely before putting it back on your bed.
