How to Feed an Emu
- 1). Consult a feed store for a specially formulated feed for members of the ratite family. If you are considering raising emus, they will be glad to keep the feed supplies readily available.
- 2). Know the cost involved in raising emus. Typically, an adult bird will consume about two pounds of feed each day.
- 3). Consuming fresh vegetables and fruits is healthy for your emu if you have a garden or a good supply of these foods.
- 4). Grazing for bugs, insects, worms and grasses inside their pen area is another source of nutrition for this docile bird.
- 5). Provide plenty of fresh water for your emu at all times.
- 6). Toss any feed that has gotten damp or moldy; this could lead to intestinal problems.
- 7). Combining corn, alfalfa and wheat makes a good feed for the emu. Soybean products should be less than 300 pounds per ton according to the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service website.
