If you are new mom or dad, you sure are experiencing one thing your baby crying out for attention. As the baby has no other way to communicate its problems, it cries. What do you do when this happens? You try out various means to calm him/her down may be he/she wants food, or a nappy change!

You may have to try out a number of things before you realize what is bothering him/her. At such times, many parents think how wonderful it would be if their baby were able to tell exactly what was bothering him/her. Do not worry; there is indeed a solution you need to teach your baby to communicate using signs.

The first question is it good to teach my baby the signs? If you do it right, give your baby enough time to pick up and make it a fun experience, it sure is a good idea. The best thing about doing this is both you and your baby start understanding each other, lessening frustration for both.

Before you start signing with your little one, you need to master the task on your own. Even before that, you need to separate the myths from the facts. Here are a few common misconceptions you are sure to come across in this regard.

Myth 1: The signs are quite difficult for your baby.

Does your baby point to an object when it wants it? The first signs are like these simple, e.g. touching your fingertips to your mouth to sign eat or making a fist with the other fingers while touching our lips with the thumb to sign drink.

Babies love to imitate if you repeat signs, they are sure to realize the association between the sign and the concept and try to imitate these when they feel the need. You need to have patience, as the time your baby takes to respond may be short or long.

Myth 2: The use of signs is just another fad.

Does your baby hold up his arms when he wants you to pick him up? The use of signs to communicate between babies and parents exists, even if you do not realize it. However, developing a proper method in this regard could help you ease the difficulties of parenting and bond with your little one with ease.

Myth 3: The signing affects your babys ability to talk, i.e. it delays speech.

Well, signs do affect the speaking abilities of your child but in a positive way. Teaching your baby to sign does not mean you show him/her only the sign. The cardinal rule you speak out the word whenever you sign.

This practice helps the baby understand the relationship between the sign, the spoken word and the concept. Signing also aids baby education it enriches vocabulary and enhances concept development.

There is no limit on who can sign with the baby; therefore, you can involve your spouse, the babys brother/sister, or his/her grandparents in this. This helps strengthen family bonds as it helps all family members to communicate with the newest, and the smallest, member of the family!
