How to Make Dirt Harder to Make a Pond
- 1). Loosen the dirt on the bottom of the pond to a depth of about 3 to 6 inches with a shovel or backhoe.
- 2). Remove any large rocks, wood or other debris from the loose dirt.
- 3). Place the mechanical compactor in the pond hole.
- 4). Insert ear plugs.
- 5). Turn the machine on, firmly grasping the handles to avoid having the compactor jump away from you. The dirt compactor will immediately begin bouncing or vibrating.
- 6). Guide the dirt compactor around the bottom of the pond hole, systematically covering the entire area.
- 7). Turn the compactor off and remove it from the pond hole.
- 8). Run the garden hose in the pond hole, allowing the partially-compacted soil to soak up the moisture. The dirt should be damp, with no standing water or puddles.
- 9). Repeat Steps 3-5 until the dirt is sufficiently hard.
