Olympus Has Fallen Will Arrive in April 2013
Remember when the battle between the two Snow White films was raging and everyone assumed whichever film made it first out of the gate would be the winner? Well, let's see, how did that race to be first turn out? Mirror Mirror arrived first, opening to generally negative reviews and an $18.1 million opening weekend. Arriving second, Snow White and the Huntsman snagged a $56 million opening weekend and has a sequel in the works.
So, being the first to arrive in theaters doesn't necessarily spell disaster for film #2.
Now word comes that FilmDistrict has picked up one of the two 'attack on the White House' films in the works and has set a release date of April 5, 2013. Olympus Has Fallen starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman has gotten the jump on its competition, Roland Emmerich's White House Down with Channing Tatum, which won't be released until June 28, 2013. However, what makes this box office race different from the Snow White battle is that unlike Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman, Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down have very similar storylines. Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman had nothing in common other than the names of a few of the key characters, while Olympus and White House Down seem to be cut from the same cloth.
The Olympus Has Fallen plot: "Olympus Has Fallen is an action thriller starring Gerard Butler as a disgraced Secret Service agent who is called back to duty when the White House is taken over by terrorists."
Announcing the acquisition, FilmDistrict's Peter Schlessel stated: "Olympus is a great action thriller that will keep audiences guessing and on the edge of their seat. Everyone at FilmDistrict is happy to be in business again with Avi, Mark and the team at Millennium and with a film starring Gerry Butler, who also stars in Playing For Keeps."
