How to Plan a Trip to Copenhagen

    • 1). Ride a bicycle. There is no reason to rent a car in Copenhagen. Almost all of the streets have well appointed bike lanes, and you can explore the city like a local. There are free bikes provided by the city that you can ride for a coin deposit. Biking is one of the best ways to explore Copenhagen. You can cross the city very quickly (without fear of getting hit by a car), and you can stop whenever you want to check out an intriguing tourist site, coffee shop or boutique. Such pleasurable urban biking is rare outside of northern Europe.

    • 2). Hit the tourist sites. A visit to Copenhagen is not complete without a boat tour. For a mere 30 kroners you can see many Danish sites (such as the famous Little Mermaid statue) from the water. Tivoli Gardens is one of the oldest amusement parks still in operation. It has been one of Denmark’s major attractions since it opened in 1843. They often have outdoor events. You can also view the changing of the guard at Amalienborg Palace daily.

    • 3). Visit Christiania, the self governing “free-town” in the borough of Christianshavn. The free-town has an interesting history of hippie experimentalism and squatting. The future of the town is in danger, so visit the charming bungalow houses and delicious vegetarian restaurant while you still can.

    • 4). Shop like a local. Hit Nansensgad, Nørrebro, or Vesterbro for cool boutiques, hip eateries, and local water holes.

    • 5). Visit Assistens Kirkegård. It's the cemetary in Nørrebro where Hans Christian Anderson, the philopsher Soren Kierkegaard and scientist Niels Bohr are buried. It's beautiful to walk through, and a flea market operates on its outskirts through the summer months into the late fall.
