How to Develop Long Range Goals in Education
- 1). Write down outcomes you would like your classroom, school, district or nation to achieve. Write until you have exhausted all of your ideas--at this point being realistic is less important than exploring possibilities.
- 2). Review your list. Come up with at least two practical and simple ways to move toward each goal. Cross out any goals for which you couldn't provide two practical and feasible ways to reach them.
- 3). Select the three most salient goals from your list. These goals should hold the most benefit and value for your population of interest (class, school, district or nation). Limiting the number of goals will increase your success at reaching them. It is important to plan for success by being realistic and setting limits.
- 4). Devise a plan moving back from the long-range goals you have identified. Starting from the outcome of the goal you have set will help you develop practical ways to reach that outcome. Share your three long-range goals with others--public acknowledgment of that which you wish to achieve will provide accountability, encouragement and support as you begin the process of actualizing your goal.
