How to Prepare for a European Backpacking Vacation
- 1). Determine the extent and course of your backpacking trip. Determine where you will backpack, based on research of the towns you wish to see, the distance you are capable of backpacking and the time limit you have. Getting an itinerary in place is the most important first step because it will determine if you will need passports, visas or other permission to visit the country. Check with the local consulate for the countries that you will be in to make sure you meet these requirements.
- 2). Work on improving your physical fitness and backpacking skills locally, before leaving for your trip. Starting one month or more before your trip, work on extending the distance you are comfortable backpacking and your physical stamina. Practice backpacking skills including staying hydrated, packing your pack, camping skills and survival skills.
- 3). Purchase the necessary equipment for your European backpacking trip, keeping it as light as possible. Take survival gear you would take on any backpacking trip, including first aid products, sleeping bag, cooking equipment, a backpacking stove, water bottles, food and water purification equipment. Other items to pack include detailed maps, clothing based on the terrain including good boots, a compass and safety gear if doing any climbing.
- 4). Let others know where you are going, when you will be in contact and what to do if they do not hear from you. Throughout Europe, cell phone service is available, but you may need to have a carrier that provides service in the country; check with yours. If staying any nights in a hotel, leave contact information with family or friends.
- 5). Finalize plans before you leave for your European backpacking vacation. Check weather reports, making adjustments as needed. Consider hiring a local guide to help you on your backpacking trip. Finalize travel arrangements including airfare, car hire and other transportation needs.
