If you and your family are crazy about horses, a French riding holiday can be one of the loveliest ways to spend your summer vacation. With beautiful scenery, fantastic weather during the summer months, and some charming towns and villages to visit, the French countryside is a wonderful place to take a horse riding trip, and is close enough to home that it doesn't pose too many logistical problems even if you are transporting your own horses! Here we look at how to plan the perfect French riding holiday, whether you transport your own horses and ponies, or rent some while you are there.

Plan a Route

Even if the main goal is to explore, you should consider planning a route if you are planning to stay in different places and cover a decent amount of ground rather than returning to the same stables every night. This is obviously because finding accommodation with vacancies is hard enough in the summer when it's just you and the kids, but if you have horses to house too it can be almost impossible without prior planning! You may also want to visit specific attractions during your trip so exploring whilst having a bit of a plan is a good idea.

Plan Your Travel Well in Advance

If you are planning to transport your horses in a horse box, and travel by ferry, make sure you plan the trip well in advance and make sure you know exactly what you need to do, and where you and your horses are going to need to be at what time. If you need any supplies from the vet or to buy any extra equipment, make a list and make sure you get everything you need in plenty of time to avoid stress and hassle closer to the time. Your horses will also need passports to be able to travel into and out of France.

Look Online for Horse Friendly Places

Wherever you want to go in France, finding horse friendly businesses is easy thanks to the internet. You can even use Google's translation service to look at French language sites if you don't speak French - it isn't perfect, but it should tell you enough to get the information you need. Making sure you know where there are vets and horse riding supply shops nearby, as well as of course stables, will mean you are equipped for any horse emergency or equipment failure.
