    Household Hazardous Waste Facility

    • The best way of disposing unwanted or unusable swimming pool chemicals is by contacting your local household hazardous waste (HHW) facility. Check your telephone directory under the local government pages for the number and address of your local HHW.

    Contact Your Local Fire Department

    • If your town or city doesn't have a household hazardous waste facility, pack the swimming pool chemicals you need to dispose of in original containers and contact your local fire department and ask them whom to call or where to take the pool chemicals.

Donate to Your Neighbors, or to a Community Pool

    • If the swimming pool chemicals are still usable, consider donating them to a neighbor who has a pool or to a local community pool. Make sure the chemicals are in noncombustible containers and any oxidizing chemicals are not stored on wooden pallets.

Contact a Local Pool Supply Store

    • Contacting a local swimming pool supply store to see if they can dispose of the chemicals for you is another option.

    Chlorine Dangers

    • Chlorine is a poisonous, flammable and corrosive chemical that poses the risk of injury, fire and explosion. When handling the chemical do not breathe in the fumes, consume or ingest the chemical, or touch or handle it without gloves on. Also do not mix chlorine with any other chemicals and don't mix different kinds of chlorine together.

    Other Swimming Pool Chemical Dangers

    • Like chlorine, algaecide poses a risk of an explosion. The chemical by itself is not combustible, but mixed with other chemicals it can fuel a fire. Also, algaecide can give off a gas if exposed to fire.

Stabilizers can emit an irritating toxic gas if exposed to fire. When mixed with chlorine, stabilizers can explode.

Oxidizers can cause an explosion also. Oxidizers act as an oxygen source and when mixed with other chemicals, they will fuel an explosion.

Alkalinity adjusters contain hydrochloric acid and can cause an explosion as well. These chemicals can also cause severe burns if not handled properly.

    Don'ts

    • Do not dispose of swimming pool chemicals down a sewer, drain or waste water system. Do not mix chemicals in the same container. Follow any stated cautions and keep all swimming pool chemicals dry. Also, store the chemicals away from flames and sources of heat.
