Starting a Tanning Salon Business - 2 Important Tips
Starting a tanning salon can be real rewarding once your salon is open, but there are a few thing you need to know before signing on the location and purchasing your equipment.
One of the mistakes a lot of new salon owners make is to sign a lease and order tanning beds.
Not knowing how many amps are available in the power panel in the space the just secured.
Most standard 20 minute beds require 20 or 30 amp breakers and high performance and high pressure tanning beds require breaker sizes from 40 amps up to 100 amps depending on the tanning bed.
Most 1000 to 1500 square foot locations usually have a 200 amp service.
So, depending on the type of tanning beds chosen, you could easily need a lot more amps than are provided.
Always check with your location leasing agent and find out how much amperage you have in your power panel.
If you don't have enough, you have options:You could ask or require that the additional amps that you need are supplied by the landlord since you are signing a long term lease or you could end up having to upgrade the power yourself.
Another important factor would be the air-conditioning available in your location.
This will obviously be determined by how many tanning beds you put into your salon, but the general rule of thumb is that you need 1 ton of air-conditioning per tanning bed.
So, a five bed tanning salon would need a 5 ton air-conditioning unit.
Not 100% necessary initially when you start up, but it's definitely something to keep in mind.
When this comes in to play is when your salon gets busy and all of your tanning beds are running at the same time.
Back to back sessions during the peak hour which are between 11am and 2pm and again between 4pm and 7pm.
If you are booked solid during these time-frames and you don't at least have 1 ton of air-conditioning per tanning room, then your salon will be hot and could get uncomfortable.
