Types

• Wild senna flowers grow best in the thicket and wetland areas of the state, and bloom during the summer. Larger Oklahoma plants, like the Caddo sugar maple, have a rounded shape, and thrive best in the state's hot and dry areas. Native Oklahoma shrubs include the strawberry bush, which grows best in shade, and have flat, light green flowers with fuchsia foliage and vivid red berries in the fall.
  
  

Colors

• The fringe tree lends color to Oklahoma's natural scenery by boasting ivory flowers that have a pleasant fragrance; the medium green leaves on the tree turn yellow or brown in autumn. Native shrubs like the smooth sumac display yellow flowers, and pointy leaves that are a bluish-green hue. The false blue indigo is a flower with attractive bluish-purple blooms and vivid green leaves, and was voted the Perennial Plant Association's 2010 Perennial Plant of the Year.
  
  

Size

• The persimmon tree is native to Oklahoma; the tree grows up to 70 feet, and has orange, edible fruit. Many Oklahoma shrubs, however, are noticeably smaller, like the fragrant sumac and sweetspire, which has bright red berries and ornamental white flowers, respectively. Attractive garden additions include the red cardinal flower, which eye-catching red pointy petals -- the flower can grow up to 4 feet tall.
