    • 1). Choose between an automatic salt chlorinator or an automatic tablet or stick chlorinator. A salt chlorinator changes the composition of the pool water from chlorine treatment to salt water-based.

    • 2). Install an in-line chlorinator on the edge of the pool close to the filtration system by the skimmer basket. The chlorinator attaches to a T-shaped PVC pipe at its base. One side of the PVC pipe connects the chlorinator to the pool, and the other side of the PVC pipe connects from the chlorinator to the return line in the filtration system.

    • 3). Turn off the pool pump and the filtration system. Close all valves. Cut into the return line that circulates filtered water from the pool pump to the heater then into the pool. Use an adapter to connect the PVC pipe to the pool pipes.

    • 4). Attach a check valve onto the PVC pipe that runs between the chlorinator and the return line. Seal the valve into the PVC pipe with PVC solvent cement or fitted seals. Point the check valve away from the heater and toward the pool to indicate water flow direction. The check valve prevents chlorine from flowing into the heater and pump, where it can cause permanent damage.

    • 5). Place the chlorinator at the edge of the pool in an upright position, with the control valve and feeder tube turned toward the pool. The chlorinator stands on a base, with the PVC pipe at the bottom and the body assembly on top. The refillable body of the chlorinator stores the chemicals. The top of the chlorinator includes a filter, washer seal and lid.

    • 6). Perform a visual inspection to confirm that all required parts are assembled in the correct order. The chlorinator should stand upright, with the control valve on the pool side and the check valve on the filtration side. The check valve may be drilled into the PVC pipe between the chlorinator and the filter if necessary.

    • 7). Add the appropriate chemicals to the automatic chlorinator. Automatic chlorinators generally use salt, liquid chlorine, trichlor tablets or bromine sticks. Only use the chemical type and quantity specifically stated in the product manual. Refill the automatic dispenser on a regular maintenance schedule.

    • 8). Turn on the pump for five minutes to check for leaks or loose fittings. Tighten all valves. Lift up any loose flow lines off the floor. Align the plastic lines with the water pipes near the pool pump and tie them in place with zip-ties.
