How to Make Your Own Tabletop Fountain
- 1). Choose a waterproof container. Use any ceramic or glass bowl as long as it is large enough to accommodate a small water pump. It should be 8 to 16 inches across and 4 to 6 inches deep. Place the container on a protective mat to prevent damage to the tabletop.
- 2). Place the water pump in the container. An aquarium pump is acceptable. Any submersible pump will work as long as it has an output of less than 100 gallons per hour. If it does not have suction cup feet, add them to keep the pump secure in the bowl. Place the electric cord over the side of the bowl to the back of the container.
- 3). Add tap water to the bowl to cover the intake valve. Use distilled water if the water in your area is hard. Plug the pump in to an electrical outlet to be sure it is working. Unplug the pump and adjust the flow of water if your pump has a regulator.
- 4). Attach one end of your tubing to the pump spout. Use a sharp knife to cut the tubing to a length that will accommodate your container and design.
- 5). Place large rocks in the bottom of the container to cover the pump. Add smaller rocks or pebbles to cover the tubing and create an interesting flow of water. Position additional stones, shells and artificial plants to create your desired effect. Adjust the tubing around the rocks and other accents so that water flows freely.
- 6). Plug the pump in to an electrical outlet and adjust the flow of water if needed. If there is too much water in the container, use a turkey baster to remove some of it. Enjoy the peaceful flow of water in your tabletop water fountain.
- 7). Check the level of the water daily for the first week to be sure that water covers the intake valve. Add or remove water as needed. Adding a small amount of bleach to the water will help keep your fountain and rocks clean.
