Signs & Symptoms of Graft Vs. Host Disease
- Symptoms of GVHD in the gastrointestinal tract includes vomiting, inflammation of the intestines, abdominal cramps or pain, diarrhea and nausea.
- GVHD may affect the liver and cause pain in the right side of the abdomen, along with symptoms of jaundice or yellowing of the skin. Hepatitis, which is inflammation of the liver, may also present symptoms like dark-colored urine and clay-colored stools.
- The mucus membranes of the eyes and mouth are moist under normal circumstances. However, they may become dry in the presence of Graft Versus Host Disease.
- Skin rashes are often the first symptom of Graft Versus Host Disease. Itchy skin may precede the appearance of rashes which initially appear in isolated locations and later spread to encompass the entire body.
- GVHD may affect the lungs, as evidenced by coughing, difficulty breathing, wheezing and other abnormal breath sounds.
