Are Ferns Perennial?
- Ferns are related to mosses and liverworts. More than 12,000 species of ferns exist, but none of them produce flowers or fruits.
- Most ferns reproduce via spores found on the lower sides of their fronds. The plants also spread by underground rhizomes. You can divide ferns and share them with friends, or transplant them into another part of the garden.
- A few ferns stay green year round. They never lose their leaves, even during winter months, making it obvious that they are perennial plants. Evergreen ferns tend to tolerate the most shade. Ferns that stay evergreen include the Christmas fern, tassel fern and Scott's fern.
- Most ferns require shade and plenty of humidity. The perennial plants need moist, well-drained, organic soil to grow and produce new fronds each spring or to stay green year-round.
