According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), male farm operators outnumber women by more than double as of 2007. There are almost three times as many male farm principal operators than female. However, there are twice as many female second operators than men, possibly due to family-owned farming. This is why there are scholarships available for both women in agriculture and those related or married to someone who is in the trade. They are accessible to workers in the industry or students majoring in agriculture. - American Agri-Women (AAW) provides three annual scholarships for women in agriculture. There are two Daughters of American Agriculture Scholarships available in the amount of $500 each. One is for women between the ages of 18 and 23 and the other for women 24 and over. Applicants must be a rancher or farmer or be a daughter, wife or close relative of a person employed in agriculture. They must also be possess knowledge or work experience in agriculture and financial need. The Helen Whitmore Memorial Fund is given in the amount of $400 for women who attend the annual AAW Annual Convention. Funds can be used for travel, housing or registration expenses and applicants do not have to be a current AAW member but must have an interest in agriculture. The
Gail McPherson Scholarship is given for $400 to women attending the annual AAW Fly-In event. This must be the first time attending this event.
