Bangkok is one of the most visited tourist destinations of south-east Asia. Also called "Venice of the East" the city boasts of rich historical heritage, the most significant being The Grand Palace. Situated in the heart of the city, the palace consists of many buildings. Earlier the Kings of Siam used it as their official residence. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is the most significant building of the Grand Palace. Build in 1782 it is basically a chapel. The structures depict diverse purposes and styles, portraying the influence of various kings ruling Bangkok. The Outer Court another important part of the Grand Palace is situated in the northwest area of the site. Other buildings include the Sala Sahathai Samakhom, used for important receptions and meetings and the Sala Luk Khun Nai which is home to various departments of the Royal Household. The Middle Court is the largest and most important court of The Grand Palace. As the name suggests this court is situated in the middle part of the palace and is home to many important residential and state buildings. The court is divided into three groups namely the throne halls and one part called the Siwalai Garden quarter. The Siwalai Garden also called the 'Crystal Garden' 'Right Garden' and 'Turtle Garden' in ancient times is situated to the easternmost side of the Middle court. These buildings situated here are a combination of Thai and Western architecture.
