Although herbicides are intended to kill grasses and weeds they can be harmful to other plants. Remember: herbicides are a poison. As such, they can be harmful to pets and wildlife. So if you have pet rabbits you like to let out in your yard, or are conscientious about not harming the wild rabbits that may hop about, you should choose pet-safe herbicides. - BurnOut II can be compared to Roundup in terms of effectiveness. Unlike Roundup, BurnOut II is natural and biodegradable. It will not harm the soil and is safe for animals and humans. This herbicide is a blend of vinegar and lemon juices, containing clove oil, sodium laurel sulfate and mineral oil. This spray-on herbicide works fast, with results typically evident in 20 minutes. Use Burnout on shrubbery beds. Used as a post-defoliant, it helps control grass and weeds. Although annuals will be killed immediately, perennials will regenerate after an application of the herbicide, thus requiring additional treatments.
- Lightning Fast is another weed killer product that comes as a spray-on that is premixed and ready to use. It also combines the use of clove oil with vinegar. Expect results to start showing within an hour of application.
- The main ingredients in Bite Blocker EcoBlender Weed Killer are soybean oil, cedar oil and citric acids. This herbicide is rated as child and pet safe. As it will break down weeds into a compost, it makes this product suitable for agricultural gardens or flower gardens.
- Consumer Brands LG Safe N Simple Weed Control uses only all-natural ingredients, of which the main material used is corn gluten meal. This product comes in a crumbled form intended for spreading. - Fertilome Weed Free Zone is rated very low for animal and human toxicity. However, it does contain carfentrazone-ethyl, which can poison fish, so it is not recommended for use near fish ponds. It is safe to use on most grasses and will control many difficult broadleaf weeds, including clover, dandelions, chickweed, ivy and poison ivy. Reapplication is typically necessary after four to six weeks as the product will break down after that time period.
