Course Description/Rationale

This course emphasizes the consolidation of the literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyze a range of challenging literary texts from various periods, countries, and cultures; interpret and evaluate informational and graphical texts; and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on using academic language coherently and confidently, selecting the reading strategies best suited to particular texts and particular purposes for reading, and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for university, college or the workplace.

Unit Descriptions/Learning Expectations

Unit 1 âEUR" Introduction

In this unit students learn how to edit and proofread to produce final drafts, using correctly the grammar, usage, spelling, and punctuation conventions of standard Canadian English, as specified for this course, with the support of print and electronic resources when appropriate, use listening techniques and oral communication skills to participate in classroom discussions and more formal activities, with a focus on using academic language appropriately in seminars and presentations of independent study project.

Unit 2 âEUR" Lord of the flies (Novel Study)

Students read and demonstrate an understanding of complex texts from various time periods, countries, and cultures, with an emphasis on analyzing and assessing ideas, themes, concepts and arguments; demonstrate an understanding of the elements of fiction, drama, poetry, and non-fiction, with an emphasis on plays and essays; use knowledge of recent developments in the English language, vocabulary and language structures, and the conventions of standard Canadian English to read, write and speak effectively.

Unit 3 âEUR" Short Stories

In this unit, students identify and literary and informational forms suited to various purposes and audiences and use the forms appropriately in their own writing with an emphasis on adopting a suitable voice; edit and proof read to produce final drafts, using correct grammar and punctuation, according to the conventions of standard Canadian English specified for this course, with the support of print and electronic resources when appropriate; read and demonstrate an understanding of a range of literary and informational texts, both contemporary and from historical periods; demonstrate an understanding of the elements of a range of literary and informational forms, with a focus on novels, poems, plays, and opinion pieces; identify and explain the effect of specific elements of style in a range of literary and informational texts.

Unit 4 âEUR" Poetic Forms and Voices

In this unit students read and study a variety of poetic forms and learn to identify different types of poems (i.e., lyric, expository, didactic, narrative, dramatic). Students apply appropriate strategies to read, understand, and interpret poetic texts. They learn to understand the value of auditory devices, figurative language, and form in creating powerful poetry. During this unit, students demonstrate their understanding of poetry by writing Response Journals explications of poems, and original poetry; by participating in class activities; by presenting poems orally; by adapting a poem to a media form; and creating a Poetry Anthology.

Unit 5 âEUR" Media Studies

Students analyze the elements of style in a variety of texts and assess their effects; demonstrate an understanding of a variety of media, media theories, and media industry practices by analyzing representations, forms, and techniques in media works and assessing their implications for individuals and society; demonstrate an understanding of the relationships among form, content, purpose, audience, and production techniques by designing or creating media works, independently and collaboratively, based on ideas, themes, and issues examined in this course, and assessing their effectiveness.

Unit 6 âEUR" Final Examination

Assessment & Evaluation
The studentâEUR(TM)s final grade for this course will be determined as follows:

Seventy per cent (70%) of the grade will be based on evaluations conducted throughout the course, including the following: classroom performance, essay writing activities, group work, presentations, quizzes, reading activities and tests. This portion of the grade should reflect the studentsâEUR(TM) most consistent level of achievement throughout the course, although special consideration will be given to the more recent evidence of achievement.

Thirty (30%) of the grade will be based on a final exam (30%), which covers the content of units 1 to 5 and is administered towards the end of the course, as well as a final version of the course essay (30%).
