Bratz: Girlz Really Rock - Summary

School's out, and Bratz Jade, Cloe, Sasha and Yasmin are headed for summer fun at Camp Starshine - a performing arts camp where their band can really rock out. The girls are all about having a fun summer, but they realize that the camp means business when they hear the announcement that the winner of the camp showcase finale will get to star in a Hollywood movie.

It isn't long before the girls' goal of having fun takes second place to that of winning the competition and becoming a star.

As they practice for the show, the Bratz see stiff competition in star ballerina and fellow camper, Anna. Taught by the demanding Madame Demidov, Anna dances with grace and skill, but she never seems to take a break. When Anna becomes interested in one of the Bratz' guy friends, the girls befriend her and help her see that balance is as important in life as it is in ballet.

Anna learns the importance of friendship, but then Jade, Cloe, Sasha and Yasmin get stars in their eyes and decide to enter the finale individually instead of entering their band. Things get really muddy when Madame Demidov steps in and pits everyone against each other in order to further her own agenda. With so much at stake, the Bratz will have to pull together again in order for everyone to come out a winner.

Bratz: Girlz Really Rock - Guide Review for Parents

Coming on the heels of the Disney mega-hits High School Musical and Camp Rock, this musical about the Bratz going to a performing arts summer camp and competing for a spot in a Hollywood movie (with one character finding her true love, of course) seems too familiar.

Girlz Really Rock seems like a bad attempt at a Camp Rock knock off with mediocre animation, uninspiring music, and very poor aim at the target audience.

The DVD is supposedly targeted at kids ages 3 and up -- so maybe they were going for an animated flick similar to the recent tween TV movie hits, but for younger kids. The problem is, Girlz Really Rock contains some material that can hardly be seen as appropriate for the preschool or early school age set, and the Bratz' clothing and makeup would not be acceptable under the dress codes of any public school I know of.

Starting with the opening sequence of the movie, the Bratz wear clothing that is revealing, tight, and mature beyond the years of kids who would likely be interested in watching the show. As the movie begins, the Bratz grace the red carpet in long gowns with revealing necklines and slits all the way up the thigh. Next, the Bratz are seen in school passing around and admiring a hot pink string bikini top during class. When the bell rings, out of school they strut, sporting tiny skirts and midriff-showing tops. The Bratz complete these outfits with stunningly high heels and a whole lot of makeup.

Two other characters in the movie are always shown in tight, hot pink mini dresses. The two are twins (you guessed it, dumb blonde twins), and the Bratz call them nitwits. The boys play pranks on the blonde twins and others at the camp.

Additionally, the movie contains a love story between a boy and girl at the camp. The two go on romantic walks, hold hands, hug, and the girl caresses the boy's face. In one scene, the boy remarks wistfully, "I'll be her dessert." One character in the movie tries to sour the budding romance by telling the girl that she saw the boy with other girls, and that he is the type to get one girl and then move on to the next.

Will kids who are Bratz fans like the movie? Probably. But their parents may be another story. The creators did attempt to develop a message about friendship and embracing individuality, but the weak moral gets a little lost in all the the glam.
