How to Make Wood Bird Feeders
- 1). Screw or staple the cedar trim pieces together in the shape of a square (using the 1-inch screws). For optimal stability, fasten each side together with two screws or staples on the outside corners of the bird feeder. Use galvanized screws, which do not rust, and pre-drill your holes or the wood may split.
- 2). Stretch and attach the mesh to the bottom of the square frame by staple gun or screw gun. Alternatively, use metal window screen instead of galvanized mesh. If you choose window screen, don't use vinyl screen, as it will sag and likely tear. Trim any excess mesh with a razor knife or pair of scissors.
- 3). Measure out two equal lengths of rope or chain, however long you need. You could also measure four equal lengths, but that might end up being too bulky when joining the links on the S hook in Step 5. Cut the chain or rope to the desired length.
- 4). Attach the last link of the chain to a 3/8-inch screw on the inside of each frame piece, and screw in to fasten the chain. Repeat for each side if you cut four short pieces of chain, or the opposite side if you cut two longer pieces. If attaching with rope, tie a knot around the screws before screwing in. If you used staples, staple the rope or chain securely to the frame.
- 5). Join the ends of the rope or chain with the S hook. Make sure the tray is level, or the bird feeder will tilt and the seed will spill.
