    Bat Map

    • A map of the world with the locations of bat colonies will demonstrate the areas where bats have a tendency to live. A bat map will teach students that bats live all around the globe except for the coldest climates. Put a world map on a bulletin board, and have the students push pins or past stickers on the places bats live.

    Migration

    • Use the another bat map to teach the students how bats migrate across the world. Have the children research several types of bats, and show the migration routes on the world map. Use different colored stickers to indicate different types of bat's migration from cooler climates to warmer climates. Write the seasons on the stickers to show when the bats are migrating.

    Colonies

    • Bats live in colonies to provide food for each other. Have the children read the book "The Adventures of Echo the Bat" to teach how the bats hunt at night, and bring food back to the colony for any bats that happen to be unsuccessful in their hunting. This book also teaches echolocation, the method that bats use to navigate.

    Fossils

    • Fossils of bats indicate that bats were in existence 50 million years ago. Show the students pictures of bat fossils, and have them draw pictures of how bats might have looked 50 million years ago based on the fossils. Use this time to discuss evolution and mutation.
