There are a number of ways to get a copy of your credit report.
Remember however, that there are three credit bureaus and you are entitled to one free credit report from each bureau every year.
You can obtain the report by merely requesting the report in writing.
In order to do so you must provide your social security number and the letter must be signed, dated and also include your address and phone number.
Requesting a report in this manner will get you all the trades on the report and how those accounts were reported with the history for about the last 24 months.
The report will also include public records as well as the inquiries made to your report.
The one thing missing from the report you will receive is your credit score.
The credit bureaus charge you to receive your credit score and have used this as a revenue generator in the last few years.
If you have been rejected for credit based on a credit bureau report, the creditor must provide you with the name of the credit bureau they used and the address to which you can write to get a copy of the report.
When this occurs it doesn't matter if you already received your free report by requesting it.
Each time you are rejected for credit you are entitled to an additional copy of the report.
So request it once again in writing with all the relevant information and a copy of the letter that you received from the creditor where you applied for credit.
Another way that has become popular is to request a report through companies that provide the reports and a monitoring service to advise when changes take place on your report.
This requires a monthly subscription that costs around $15.
00, but can be canceled anytime before the trial period expires.
If you cancel before the trial period ends most companies will not let you have another trial for six to twelve months.
With your reports, which are instantly available online, you will see your scores with each of the credit bureaus and you can dispute items online as well.
Some find this service helpful in preventing ID theft and fraud from occurring.
With so many ways to get your credit bureau reports it is foolish not to check at least once a year so that you can monitor any unusual or inaccurate items that may appear from time to time.
