Directions for Use of a Brunton Compass
- Unlock and lift the cover so that it forms a 90 degree angle. Lift the lens arm to a 45 degree angle. Place your thumb inside the thumb hook to stabilize the compass. Locate your target. Line up the sighting wire so it lines in the center of your target. Move the lens up and down until you can read the degree mark without taking your eyes off of your target. Read the bearing.
- Repeat the steps for taking a bearing. Line up the bezel marking with the North direction arrow. Proceed in the direction indicated by the sighting wire, once the direction arrow and the bezel markings are aligned.
- Decide on a reference point or landmark in the distance. Take a bearing, and then set the bearing and go. Recheck your bearing often to make sure you are on track and reset it if necessary.
