How to Cover a Kitchen Chair
- 1). Measure the front of the chair by running your measuring tape up from the bottom of the chair, across the chair seat, up over the chair back and back down to the floor via the back of the chair. Write down this number of inches. This will be your length of fabric.
- 2). Measure the width of the chair seat. Write down this figure. This will be your width of fabric. Select two shades of fabric, opting for colors and designs that are cheerful, bright and suitable for a kitchen. Cut two pieces of different colored or patterned fabric, both of equal dimensions that have the width and length that you wrote down.
- 3). Place the two pieces of fabric neatly on top of each other. The un-patterned or un-colored side of each piece of fabric should be touching. Tuck the edges of the fabric in, so that you create a 1/4 inch hem. Insert pins along the tucked in edges of the fabric, sliding in a pin every 3 inches.
- 4). Sew the two pieces of fabric together with your sewing machine, removing pins as you go. When finished, place the piece of fabric over your kitchen chair, arranging it so that it covers the chair, but so that none of the fabric touches the floor.
- 5). Cut 12 pieces of cord or ribbon, each 6 inches in length. Insert three pins along each each side of the chair back, sliding a pin along the top, middle and back of each side of the chair back. These positions are where your ties will go, holding the slipcover on the chair.
- 6). Sew two pieces of cord or ribbon on either piece of fabric where your pins are. Each piece of fabric should have its own set of ties. Use a sewing machine or sew by hand. Once your ties are in place, tie each of them in a bow.
- 7). Measure the height of the seat of the chair and multiply it times two. Add to that figure the width of the chair's seat and write it down. This is your new length. Measure the length of the chair's seat and write it. This will act as your new width. Add 1/2 inch to both the length and width. Cut a piece of sheer fabric such as lace or chiffon to these dimensions.
- 8). Fold a 1/4-inch hem on all sides, inserting pins every 3 inches to hold it in place. Sew it in place, removing pins as you go. Lift up the fabric of the chair cover that covers the seat and lay your long piece of sheer fabric over the seat. Straighten it so that it hangs evenly on either side, with no end of it touching the floor.
- 9). Cut 2 strips of 1/2 inch fusible web that are the same length as the chair seat, and 2 strips of fusible web that are the same width as the chair seat.
- 10
Peel of the paper backing and lay each strip on top of the sheer piece of fabric that covers the seat, 1/4 inch inward from each edge. Press the chair cover on top of it firmly and iron the fusible webbing in place.
