Why keep a diet journal? First of all what does the word "diet" mean? Wikipedia defines diet as "the sum of food consumed by a person.
" It goes on to say that "dietary habits are the habitual decisions an individual or culture makes when choosing what foods to eat.
" In other words, a diet is what you eat.
Let's therefore say that keeping a diet journal means a keeping journal of what you eat -- regardless of whether you are trying to lose weight or not.
Keep a daily food journal for two weeks -- even if you're not yet on a diet plan to lose weight Your health and fitness are important to you.
A diet journal can help toward that goal.
As an experiment, keep a diet journal for two weeks.
Even though you may have an intuitive feeling that your current diet is healthy and nutritious, keeping a journal allows you to test your feelings against the "facts" of what you actually eat, how much you eat, and when you eat.
Your journal will help you estimate the size of the food portions that you are actually eating, along with the number of total calories contained in each portion -- and the number of calories in each macronutrient -- carbs, protein and fats.
You will have to pay more attention to nutrition labels on food packages to determine serving size, calories, and macronutrient content.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner and all snacks should be included.
At the end of two weeks you should be able to answer some basic questions.
What is your average daily total caloric intake? What percent comes from Carbs? Proteins? Fats? Establish a goal to reach the ideal weight This is a decision you alone can make.
Your ideal weight and body fat percentage depend on your height, bone structure, age and sex, your own personal goal.
Set a realistic and healthy goal.
If you've decided to lose some fat and weight, you'll need to change your diet and increase your exercise routine.
