I'll admit, I do like to look at maps.
But when I'm on the road and my GPS system takes over, I don't miss them! The days of trying to figure out how to refold your road map are gone with the advent of the GPS.
Travelers, soldiers, scouts, adventurers have much to benefit from owning a GPS (Global Positioning System).
These benefits range from features that allow for precision location to additions of items that can add hours of fun to your GPS system.
Technology keeps advancing so fast that it's scary to think what might be missed if you sneeze! One of the marvels of the information age is given to us by the United States Military, and actually, the roots go all the way back to Russia's Sputnik.
Sputnik begat a satellite program, allowing the military in the U.
S.
to come up with its own ideas for those satellites.
The military used the GPS before the consumer by tracking its troop movements and enemy positions, giving them an advantage in deployments and strategies.
Businesses use the devices to track their fleet so they know precisely where their product and drivers are.
Today any consumer worldwide has access to this handy little gadget.
The GPS systems come with dash mounts or can be handheld.
The most common use is for directions through a strange city you are visiting, as a map across country or for detours around construction traffic or accidents.
Parents can use the GPS to track their children's movements.
With twenty-four satellites zeroing in on a position, the accuracy is unbelievable! When visiting your home away from home your GPS will help you locate the nearest gas station, restaurant, hotel, there, or ATM to you.
The GPS will speak to you giving you point-by-point directions, announcing street names and turns as you travel to your destination.
Hunters and hikers can use a handheld device, letting the old compass remain in their pockets.
Sailors used to rely on the stars to navigate the waters and now the GPS can be put on that task.
Space travel has dramatically changed, as well.
The old attitude sensors have been replaced with the GPS allowing spacecraft to hold a more accurate time and an extremely precise position.
I have not yet fully tapped the uses and benefits of my Garmin Nuvi 350 GPS system.
If I had to choose between my GPS system and the old-fashioned fold-up map, you know where I stand!
