Ohio SR22 Requirements

    Offenses and Reinstatement

    • Ohio lists 24 reasons licenses may be legally suspended. Among these are out of state drug offenses, Ohio drug offenses, court suspension, school dropout, underage alcohol suspension, restriction violation and 12-point suspension. Ohio law requires filing an SR22 in cases of BMV-issued suspensions, or in cases such as hit and run, driving without a license, driving under the influence and 12-point violations. In cases of suspensions not related to driving record, ability to drive or insurance status a SR22 is not required to lift the suspension.

    Insurance Requirements

    • The Ohio BMV requires the same minimal insurance amounts of all drivers, regardless of insurance type. Insurance must cover injury, death and property damage. Required amounts as of 2011 are $12,500 covering bodily injury or death for one person, $25,000 covering bodily injury or death for two or more people and $7500 covering property damage. Companies such as SR22 Ohio and SR22 Bond of Ohio provide insurance policies meeting these minimum requirements.

    Filing Requirements

    • The lifting of a license suspension in Ohio requires the filing of a SR22 Bond with the BMV. The company issuing the bond assumes responsibility of filing all requisite forms with the state either electronically or via mail. Drivers covered by a SR22 bond may not drive until all the proper paperwork is filed. The BMV rejects forms with missing or incomplete information. Forms filed electronically are processed immediately. Those filed via mail take between 72 hours and five business days to process. Faxed forms are not accepted.

    Interstate Requirements

    • Interstate requirements regard drivers from states other than Ohio receiving license suspensions in the state and Ohio residents with suspended licenses who move to other states. In both of these cases, drivers must file an SR22 Bond with the Ohio BMV to lift a license suspension. The BMV requires that an insurance company licensed for business in Ohio issue such a bond. Thus, any driver violating Ohio traffic and safety laws must obey Ohio penalties and reinstatement requirements regardless of place of residence.
