    Full-size Quilt Throw

    • A quilt throw is the size of the mattress. A full-size mattress is 54-by-75 inches. The quilt can be folded at the foot of the bed to complement the colors of the spread. Laying it open on a diagonal across the bed adds and interesting decorative effect. Placing it flat on top of the spread gives a layered look.

Using a Quilt with a Dust Ruffle.

    • A larger quilt is needed when used with a dust ruffle. With a standard-thickness mattress, the over-all size of the quilt is 80-by-95 inches. This provides for a 13-inch overhang on the sides to cover the top of the dust ruffle. Lengthwise, there is 13 inches for the overhang at the foot of the bed. There is an extra 7 inches to cover the pillows with a small tuck under them. For a thicker mattress or pillows, add more width and length accordingly.

Using a Quilt with an Attached Ruffle

    • For this type of quilt, the main part should be the size of the mattress, 54-by-75 inches. The attached, hemmed ruffle is 13 inches wide and attaches to three sides of the quilt, leaving the head end without a ruffle. In making it yourself, get material that is triple the length of the measurements where the ruffle is to be attached. For the standard size, that would be 205 inches of material, 14 1/2-inches wide.

Put the quilt on the bed without the pillows being under it for the best appearance. Cover the pillows in shams that complement the colors in the quilt.
