Criteria

  • To deduct mortgage insurance expenses from your taxes, you have to meet certain criteria. The property for which you obtain the mortgage has to be either your principal residence or your second home. You can't claim the mortgage insurance deduction if you rent out the property. You must also obtain the mortgage insurance from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Federal Housing Administration, the Rural Housing Service or a private mortgage insurance company.
